In the process of working on photographs inspired by the 1973 film Badlands, I stumbled upon the work Objective Netherlands created originally by Reinjan Mulder in 1974 and repeated and translated by Cleo Wächter in 2017. Mulder and later Wächter applied the abstract rationality of grids to the landscape of the Netherlands and then documented the lived reality of the landscape at certain intersection points. With my past work, I’ve always been interested in the intersection and friction between abstract-factual structures and the lived reality that occurs within those structures. With the work I am undertaking related to the film Badlands I am interested in understanding a factual place (the high plains and desert of Southern Colorado where the film was created) by mapping onto it the narrative and locations of a fictional reality.
